Attack of the Indies!
Hello Dork Tech! It’s been a while hasn’t it? Sorry about that, I’ve been quite busy working on my Indie gaming company’s first game. But you don’t wanna hear about that now, No I’m here to talk about some sick indie games that are out RIGHT NOW!(Well, I’m including Tiggit.net in this article which isn’t a game.)
First, I want to talk about Cobalt. Never heard of it? that’s ok because I’m about to tell you basically the only two things you need to know to make the decision to get it. The game is developed by Oxeye games and published by every Indie gamers favorite company Mojang (Yea, the company that made Minecraft). Cobalt is difficult to explain, it’s quite a unique game. Its best described as Quake III, Super Smash Bros(SSB), and a cute android all got together and had a child. the game features a quite impressive list of weapons, Maps that take after SSB, and some of the most interestingly built characters ever. You can pick it up here(http://playcobalt.com/) for somewhere around 10 USD.
My next big Indie thingumabob I want to mention is Tiggit.net. Tiggit is , again, difficult to explain. Its best said by comparing it to a simplified version of Valve’s Steam platform, but Tiggit has some distinct differences. First, everything on Tiggit is Indie made or so classic that you don’t care about it being Indie. Second, ITS ALL FREE(Or demos, but as of this writing there are 32 demos and 353 full games). Third, Its stable! There aren’t Jurassic load times or frequent crashes. In closing out this bit of news I would also like to mention that their lineup is quite good also, they have Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Crashaw’s Chzo Mythos games, the Marathon Trilogy, a good little library of rougelikes, and some other jems that I’ll let you uncover.
Astronot. Astronot is the last game I want to talk about. This game is completely created, produced, and distributed by Wade McGillis (@wademcgillis on twitter). the story follows the journey of a lowly garbage man on a high tech space ship who is hurled onto the surface of a strange alien world after his ship crashes. as your player sets off exploring the new world hes discovered he will meet many different enemies, Items and all way of cool things. This game is best described as a Metroid-vania style game, It rewards exploration, good memory, quick reflexes and intelligence. I personally like having the map provided on McGillis’s website, without it I would have already been lost many times as the game provides no in game map. In closing of this tidbit of Indie Info I will say be carefull, be ready to be addicted once again to blowing away enemies of different colors, jumping over lava pits, exploring massive cavernous landscapes, and mashing your fire button, because you are going to be just about as addicted as I am. You can get Astronot here(http://wademcgillis.com/games/2012-games/astronot/)
To end off this article I want to say that Indies are keeping true to the gaming Industry’s origins, making things that are fun and heartfelt, not making games to please some multi-million dollar investor. That is all.
