Did Genesis Mining and Hashflare Get Hacked?
Update: 8/16/17 12:52am: Users are reporting Genesis Mining is back online.
On 8/15/17 around 5pm PST the popular cloud-based Genesis Mining website went offline. Shortly after Hashflare customers started reporting the Hashflare website is offline as well.
This comes just a couple hours after we saw a 150 million dollar move of Bitcoin on the Blockchain.
Recently a backdoor was found in the server management software used by hundreds of cryptographically signed software developed by NetSarang. This software was used by many financial institutions, and may have been used by Genesis Mining & Hashflare. It could be possible the cloud services have taken their website offline to help protect themselves against this exploit.
Omnia Tech, partners with Genesis Mining has posted the following on their website:
“DEAR MEMBERS, WE ARE PERFORMING SERVER, BACKEND DASHBOARD MAINTENANCE THAT WILL MAKE CERTAIN FEATURES TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE. SUCH AS SIGNUP, LOGIN AND OTHER BACKEND RELATED FEATURES. IN THE MEANTIME, YOUR PATIENCE IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED.”
So far both companies have not said anything on this downtime on any of their social media. We still don’t know if this website downtime will affect payments from the cloud mining services.
Folks are sharing their frustrations with the lack of communication from both companies on Twitter:

Due to technical difficulties our website front-end is still in maintenance mode. We’ll be back shortly.

We will continue to monitor the situation and update this post as news filters in.
