Like the World Trying to Kill You? Try NEO Scavenger!

I am completely fascinated by the open beta produced by Blue Bottle Games. The different things you have to watch out for are astounding. I had just recovered from a bout of hypothermia, and my water supplies were running low when I noticed a scavenger behind me. I checked his basic stats and had to do a double take. A rifle? What gives? The closest thing I had to a weapon was a meat cleaver, so I booked it trying to get to the next town before he caught up with me. I made it, with him only 2 tiles away. Now I had a choice. Loot the apartment buildings or a storage shed that might hold a weapon. I chose the apartments, reasoning that a large number of people means more chance of a gun. I was wrong. All I found was a backpack. An amazing find in most circumstances, but useless now. I equipped it and tried to make a break for it. I was too tired to move. All I could do was watch as my tiny representation was slayed by a scavenger. The dirty varmint probably took my backpack too! The point is, in this post-apocalyptic turn-based survival game, anything goes. Everybody you meet is out to get you, and you start with absolutely nothing. If you have a bone to pick with developers for their easy games, pencil in an hour or two with this game. You will be too amazed at the complexity inside the simplistic design to care about anything else. You even get to choose what skills you have at the beginning, which is a vitally important decision. The only thing I have a bone to pick with is the controls. They are fairly easy to get used to, once you understand them, but who can understand them at the start? All you are given is a start menu with the option to play the game or learn the controls. If you choose the controls, they literally serve no purpose without the game open in another window to compare. Other than that, it’s a great game, and one I definitely recommend.

I gave this game a 4.5 out of 5
